Rape: now women can bite back

The words of a rape victim - "If only I had teeth down there" - have inspired the design of a new anti-rape device.

Rapex - dubbed the 'rape trap' - is a product worn internally by women. The hollow inside is lined with rows of razor-sharp hooks, which are designed to latch on to a rapist's penis during penetration. They can only be removed by a doctor.

The product will be on the shelves of South African chemists and supermarkets later this month. South African mother-of-two Sonette Ehlers developed the original prototype in 2005 but has struggled to get it patented and approved for sale, not least because of staunch opposition from feminist groups.

"Vengeful, horrible, and disgusting," was the response from Charlene Smith, one of South Africa's leading anti-rape campaigners. Lisa Vetten, of the Centre of Violence and Reconciliation in Johannesburg, says: "This is like going back to the days when women were forced to wear chastity belts. It is a terrifying thought that women are being made to adapt to rape."

Some also fear that the sudden infliction of pain on the rapist could incite him to even greater violence.

Ehlers, however, is adamant that desperate times call for desperate measures. South Africa has the world's highest rate of sexual assault: a staggering 1.7m women are raped each year. She believes the product, priced at one Rand, will be particularly useful for poorer black women who walk long distances to and from work.

With state intervention frustratingly slow, Ehlers argues this ugly version of empowerment is justified. "I don't hate men," she says. "I have not got revenge in mind. All I am doing is giving women their power back."

Sex Offender Wins Raffle for Abuse Victim Charity

ANCHORAGE, Alaska — A convicted sex offender won a $500,000 Alaska raffle that was a fundraiser for a nonprofit organization that helps victims of sexual abuse.

Alec Ahsoak of Anchorage, 53, came forward Saturday to collect his prize.

The state sex offender registry lists Ahsoak as convicted of two counts of sexual abuse of a minor in 1993 and one count in 2000.

The raffle drawing was Friday night.

State law says all games of chance must benefit a charity. The designated beneficiary for the half-million dollar raffle was Standing Together Against Rape, or STAR.

Ahsoak says he plans to use the money to buy a home and to improve his life. He tells KTUU-TV he will donate $100,000 to STAR. (Yeah, sure.)

Inmate rips out eye, then claims he ate it

A Texas death row inmate with a history of mental problems pulled out his only good eye, authorities said Friday.

Andre Thomas told officers he ate it.

Thomas, 25, was arrested for the fatal stabbings of his estranged wife, their young son and her 13-month-old daughter in March 2004. Their hearts also had been ripped out. He was convicted and condemned for the infant's death.

While in the Grayson County Jail in Sherman, Thomas similarly had plucked out his right eye before his trial later in 2004. A judge subsequently ruled he was competent to stand trial.

A death-row officer at the Polunsky Unit of the Texas Department of Criminal Justice found Thomas in his cell with blood on his face and had him taken to the unit infirmary.

"Thomas said he pulled out his eye and subsequently ingested it," agency spokesman Jason Clark said Friday.

Thomas was treated at East Texas Medical Center in Tyler after the Dec. 9 incident. Then he was transferred and remains at the Jester Unit, a prison psychiatric facility southwest of Houston.

"He will finally be able to receive the mental health care that we had wanted and begged for from day 1," Bobbie Peterson-Cate, Thomas' trial attorney, told the Sherman Herald Democrat. "He is insane and mentally ill. It is exactly the same reason he pulled out the last one."
Thomas does not have an execution date.

The Texas Court of Criminal Appeals in October upheld his conviction and death sentence for the death of 13-month-old Leyha Marie Hughes. Also killed March 27, 2004, were his wife, Laura Christine Boren, 20, and their son, Andre Lee, 4.

Thomas, from Texoma, walked into the Sherman Police Department and told a dispatcher he had just murdered the three and had stabbed himself in the chest.

Thomas told police how he put his victims' hearts in his pocket and left their apartment, took them home, put them in a plastic bag and threw them in the trash.

Driver Threatens to Cut Students Over Seat Crumbs

MANSFIELD, Texas — A school bus driver in Texas has been accused of brandishing a knife and threatening to cut three sixth-graders who left Oreo crumbs on a seat.

Officials say police confiscated a pocket knife from 66-year-old William Allen on Friday in Mansfield. He was taken into custody on a charge of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon.

Two students told their parents Allen removed them from the bus Wednesday at Mary Orr Intermediate School. They say he threatened to cut their wrists if they didn't admit to spilling crumbs.

Allen is on paid leave until an investigation is complete. He was released from the Tarrant County jail. Online records do not show whether he has an attorney.

Mansfield is southeast of Fort Worth.

Hasbro Drops Suit Over Scrabulous

Hasbro Inc. has dropped its lawsuit against the creators of Scrabulous, an online version of the board game Scrabble previously available on Facebook.

According to documents filed in U.S. District Court in New York, Hasbro dropped the lawsuit Friday. The court documents did not specify a reason for the withdrawal of the case. Hasbro, which owns the North American rights to the word game, sued Jayant and Rajat Agarwalla, brothers from Calcutta, India, this summer. The brothers developed the unauthorized version after they were unable to find an online version they liked.

RJ Softwares, the Agarwalla brothers' company, said in a statement that it has agreed not to use the term "Scrabulous," and has made changes to different versions of the game it created after the lawsuit was filed.

Mattel, which owns the rights to Scrabble outside of North America, filed a lawsuit against the brothers in India claiming violations of intellectual property. It is not clear what the status of that lawsuit is. --Tanya Irwin

MOUNDSVILLE, W.Va. — A West Virginia mother faces charges after being accused of burning the word "wimp" into her 6-year-old daughter's neck.

Tammy Smith is charged with five counts of child abuse and of malicious assault, all felonies.

Moundsville Police Chief Jim Kudlak said Saturday that the child told police that her mother used a cigarette to burn her. Smith's daughter told authorities that her mother burned her because she was angered that the girl tripped and fell.

An employee at the child's school noticed the burns and police were called Wednesday. The girl is in foster care.

The 43-year-old Smith is being held in jail on $50,000 bond. Kudlak says he doesn't think she has an attorney yet.

Moundsville is in northern West Virginia.

Six-fingered Man Barred from Guitar Hero Tournament

Orlando, FL – Twenty-one years ago Alex Domer was born with hexadactyly, six fingers on each hand. He's lived a normal life, and most of the time his condition goes unnoticed. However, yesterday he became a victim of discrimination when he was barred from entering a Guitar Hero tournament being held at the Universal Studios park in Orlando
“It hasn't been so bad living with six fingers,” said Domer. “Occasionally I'll get the 'You killed my father' jokes, but that wasn't bad. Now, because of my birth defect I'm being accused of having an unfair advantage. It's ridiculous.”
Domer has won three previous Guitar Hero tournaments which have helped him work his way through college. “It still takes skill to win these tournaments. It's not just because of the extra fingers,” said Domer, but tournament organizers don't see it that way.
Dominic Oltman, who set up the tournament for Universal said, “Having six fingers gives Mr. Domer an unfair advantage. While other players have to shift their fingers between the five buttons, he can just leave his fingers in place. We had to take action for the integrity of the tournament.”
Many entrants in the tournament feel the ban is justified. “Guys with six fingers already get enough advantages in this world. They get better jobs because they can type faster. They're more attractive to the ladies. They can count to twelve before everybody else. It's just not fair,” said professional video gamer, Eddie Hedger.
The ACLU is looking into filing a discrimination suit on behalf of Domer. Derrick Harney, a lawyer for the ACLU, said, “This case is very similar to the suit we filed on behalf of Johnny “Four Legs” Chang who was banned from a Dance Dance Revolution tournament in 2001. That suit was settled out of court, and should give us leverage for a settlement in this case.”
Oltman said the tournament will go on as planned on Saturday. The winner will receive $5,000 and a limited edition Guitar Hero controller signed by members of Aerosmith.

Modern Toilet is a restaurant in Taiwan with modern decor and a full-on potty theme. Sweet. All 100 seats in the crowded diner are made from toilet bowls. Sink faucets and gender-coded "WC" signs appear throughout the three-storey facility, one of 12 in an island-wide chain of eateries. The menu features icecream, which is presented as poop in a toilet shaped dish. Probably not the best place to bring pussies who are easily disgusted...
